
New housing developments here in China are similar to the US in that a developer gets a hold of some land and builds on it. The difference being that instead of thirty or forty split level houses, it's usually thirty or forty (or seventy) 30-story apartment buildings.

I'll leave you to judge which is more aesthetically pleasing (it's a toss-up for me) but at least the Chinese method is a much better use of space...
